On the Shores
Of The
Cosmic Ocean
Several years ago I heard a piece of music that truly captured my imagination. I've always liked pictures of sailing ships, especailly those in full sail with the seas roiling around them. This piece of music spoke to me, as if the author had reached out personally. The tune is simple, the lyrics have meaning far deeper than the words themselves imply.I formed a mental image based on the tone poem the author penned long before I was born. As I listened to the lyrics I began to see correlations in my life; visions I'd had many times of just sailing away, free from everything. I envied the boy in that small boat, setting sail for whatever adventure he'd find, to do things his way, in his own good time.
Some years passed, the song floating in and out of memory as I'd hear it played from time to time on the local radio station, or run across it in my music collection. It always seemed to be there just when I was thinking about events in my life where sailing away would have been the perfect solution.
As is often said the truest form of discovery isn't in seeking new lands, but in seeing with new eyes. There came a time I ran across an individual here on line, someone whose heart seemed to reach out to me the moment we were first introduced. Somehow, for reasons I have no way of explaining, this song suddenly burst forward in my mind, I could see my friend sitting in his small boat heading for the virgin sea, beckoning.
I sailed with him, went places I've never been before, saw things in a totally new light and discovered even more meaning in the lyrics I had always liked simply for themselves.
Come Sail Away I'm sailing away,
set an open course for the virgin sea
I've got to be free,
free to face the life that's ahead of meOn board, I'm the captain,
so climb aboard
We'll search for tomorrow
on every shore
And I'll try, oh Lord, I'll try
to carry onI look to the sea,
reflections in the waves spark my memory
Some happy, some sad
I think of childhood friends and the dreams we hadWe live happily forever,
so the story goes
But somehow we missed out
on that pot of gold
But we'll try best that we can
to carry onA gathering of angels
appeared above my head
They sang to me this song of hope,
and this is what they said
They said "come sail away,
come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away, come sail away
Come sail away with me"I thought that they were angels,
but to my surprise
They climbed aboard their starship
and headed for the skies
Singing come sail away,
come sail away
Come sail away with me
Come sail away,
come sail away
Come sail away with me ....For a while I sailed on his starship, through the open skies. Dreaming of things I thought were real, yet only a disguise. The shores of the Cosmic Ocean beckoned once again; to live, to love, to heal this pain.
The scars were way too heavy, the pain was way too deep. Living happily together, was not to be. Time came when the dream ended, shadows replaced the stars. What once was captured, flew away only to change and return in shades of memory. I sailed away, set my course for an open sea, tried to find the starship.
We stood on the shores of the Cosmic Ocean, gazing far into the void, wondering where the starship might take us. In all our travels we came to where we began, singing: Come Sail Away, Come Sail Away, Come Sail Away With Me...........
